With more and more people now working from home, some even full time, moving home can be troublesome. Gone are the days of going to the office, so it can feel like chaos when moving home and navigating working from home too!
One of the most important things to do when relocating your office is to prepare ahead of time, and we’re here to help you with that. It can be difficult balancing work and moving home, but we have some handy tips we’ve put together to help make moving your home office seamless.
Preparation is key
Planning is vital when moving to a new location – whether you work from home or not. To prepare, start by making a list of everything that you need to do before your relocation. This means making sure you have the right infrastructure setup in your new home such as wifi, phone lines and power points. This can take some time but it is important to get it right before you start moving your setup. Next, think about what sort of furniture you need for your new home office, and if there is anything that you need to buy in advance. This could be anything from your desk, to extension cables and leads.
Take your time
Moving location is very time-consuming and it is rare that people can do this in a week or less. To get it done right, you should take your time to make sure everything is correct before relocating. The last thing you want is to speed through the process and not have the right setup in place. While you may want to rush to get in as soon as possible it can make the whole process more stressful and less successful. Trying to finish it faster can even make things worse overall.
Backup Your Files
The last thing you want to happen once your new home office is set up is to find out all the data on your hard drive has disappeared. To avoid this, make sure to back up all your digital files and data before the move. Use cloud storage or an external hard drive to ensure that your important documents and files are safe and accessible during the move.
Arrange for Utilities and Internet
If you require a new network setup, make arrangements to have utilities and internet services set up at your new location before you move in. This will ensure that you can start working right away without any interruptions.
Declutter
Before your moving day you should look at decluttering your workspace. Remove any old files and pieces of paper lying around. Depending on how long you have been in your current office, you may also have disused and old technology laying around. Rather than take up space in your moving van and in your new home, it is a good idea to remove the excess clutter either by donating your items, selling them or recycling them. Ensuring you’ve had a thorough clean of your old and new property will also help unpack all your items tidely, and will save you having to clean after all that unpacking! We’ve got some cleaning tips when moving home listed in one of our previous posts.
Label everything
When it comes to getting setup at your new home, you will want to make sure that you have labelled everything. Having everything labelled, including wires, you will know what belongs where and what use it has. Having your boxes labelled is particularly handy for any house move as it’s easier for yourself and your removals team to navigate what goes where in your house and so that you can easily find the items you are looking for.
