When moving house, you can use up a lot of materials that could potentially go to waste. To ensure you make the most of these materials and avoid the risk of waste, switching to sustainable options may be a factor you consider.

Biodegradable Bubble Wrap
Alternative to plastic bubble wrap, you can also get paper bubble wrap which is 100% recyclable and biodegradable. This reduces the amount of plastic waste created when you’ve finished using plastic bubble wrap. Before thinking about throwing out your bubble wrap, can this be used again?
Newspaper
Do you have a pile of newspapers? Perhaps you can make use of these during your packing. Great for wrapping up ornaments and glassware, using materials you already own will help you avoid having to pay for new materials. This is also a great way to recycle old newspapers too!
Recycled Paper Tape
Conventional tape is not recyclable, and so is discarded as waste. An alternative tape to use is plastic-free packaging tape. Tape will be used a lot whilst packing, particularly if you’re using cardboard boxes. So, using recyclable tape will be much more sustainable than plastic tape that will only get thrown as waste, unable to biodegrade.
Cardboard Boxes
Cardboard boxes are already recyclable, so these are a good choice when thinking about boxing materials. If you already have a tower of cardboard boxes in your home, these are a great starting point when beginning your packing.
Biodegradable Peanuts
Traditional polystyrene packing peanuts do not break down, so they can sit in landfill sites for years, possibly centuries. There is then a risk that these can sit in our oceans, lakes and rivers too, bringing a potential threat to wildlife.
An alternative to using polystyrene is using plant-based packing peanuts. These can dissolve in water, aborting the risk of them polluting our oceans.
When you have finished packing and moving supplies you may want to keep them for the future, or even donate to friends and family if you are moving soon. This will reduce the risk of them ending up as waste.
