Whilst we are all preparing for the housing market in Wales to reopen so that we can start removals again, there are some things that you can do in advance to make sure you are ready when we can finally move again.
Having a moving home checklist is essential to keep track of your move and to make sure you don’t miss anything. Take a look at our big moving day checklist that we have created for you to take the additional stress out of moving.
Confirm your moving date
Make sure before you book your removal that you have your moving date confirmed by your conveyancers and the homeowners.
This may be different if you are renting and you may be able to move into your new home over several days, meaning you have extra time to clean your home before moving your stuff in.
You may find if you are buying a home and are at the end of the property chain that you could be waiting a long time to move in, so make sure that you get a clear indication from your conveyancers first.
Contact your Utilities
Make sure before you move out that you contact your utilities to let them know you are planning to move. This includes: gas, electricity, telephone and broadband suppliers.
They will ask when you are planning to leave the property so they can put things in place to move over. Make sure before you do leave to take meter readings so that you can pass them over to your new energy suppliers.
Have a Clear Out
Make sure before you start packing up your stuff to move to get rid of anything that you don’t want to take to your new home. It is a good time to sort through any old paperwork you no longer need and start again.
Decide what things that you can resell, drop off at the local charity shop or throw away. You may find that by reselling some of your old things that you make enough money to fund your removal.
Lists, Lists and more Lists
Lists are great to keep track of everything especially so you know what exactly belongs in each room so you can coordinate when you get to your new home.
Not only that but the most important thing to note before you move in is where everything is in your home including:
- Stopcock
- Appliance instructions
- Gas and electricity meters
- Thermostat
- Fusebox
It is also a good idea to leave a list when you move for when the new homeowners arrive too.
Label Everything
When packing, try to pack by room – this is where your room inventory list will come in handy. After having a clear out packing should feel a lot less daunting too.
Make sure when you do pack to label everything including boxes and wires. Packing all your wires together without labelling is a massive no go. The last thing you want to do is try to find which wires go to what when you start unpacking which can be completely avoided.
